Exercise 3.2. Study the breakfast menu at the May Fair:

BREAKFAST AT THE MAY FAIR

The May Fair   £ 25,00 A choice of freshly squeezed orange or grapefruit juice, fresh berries and cream, followed by scrambled eggs on toast with smoked salmon. Rolls, croissants or Danish pastries, marma­lade and honey. A choice of tea, coffee, hot chocolate or milk. All the above complemented by half a bottle of Champagne.
 
The English   £ 12,00 A choice of freshly squeezed orange or grapefruit juice. Porridge, cereals, half grapefruit, melon, fresh fruit salad, yoghurt or stewed primes. Your choice of two fresh eggs, any style, with bacon or ham, sausage and tomato. Rolls, croissants or Danish pas­try, marmalade and honey: A Choice of tea, coffee, hot chocolate or milk.
 
The Continental   £ 9,70 A choice of freshly squeezed orange or grapefruit juice, rolls, croissants or Danish pastries, marmalade and honey. A choice of tea, coffee, hot chocolate or milk.
 
The Health Breakfast (calories approx. 225) £8,50 Freshly squeezed orange juice, half grapefruit, poached egg with tomato or boiled egg, slices of wholemeal bread, tea, coffee.

Exercise 3.3. Now read out the dialogues and make a note of how breakfast is ordered in each dialogue:

Dialogue 1. C. — customer; W. — waitress

 

C. — I'd like the Continental breakfast, please.

W.— Yes, certainly, Madam.

C.— With orange juice.

W.— With orange juice. And what beverage would you like, Madam?

C. — Oh, I guess I'll have the decaffeinated coffee.

 

Dialogue 2. C. — customer; W. — waitress

 

W. — Which breakfast would you take, Sir?

C. — Oh, I'll have the Health breakfast, I think.

W.— Right, Sir. How would you like your egg done?

C. — Boiled, please.

W.— How many minutes, Sir?

C. — Three. No, make it four.

W.— Very good, Sir.

 

Dialogue 3. C. — customer; W. — waitress

 

C. — This May Fair breakfast looks pretty terrific. I think I'll go for that.

W.— Fine, Sir. What juice would you take? Orange or grapefruit?

C. — Grapefruit. And I'll have coffee, please.

 

Exercise 3.4. Here are some questions a waiter / waitress might need to ask when serving breakfast at the May Fair. Practise them with your partners:

a) Which juice would you like, orange or grapefruit?

b) Would you like cereal, or fruit, or yoghourt?

c) Which cereal would you like?

d) Which fruit would you like?

e) How would you like your egg done?

f) How many minutes? (for boiled egg)

g) Would you like rolls, croissants or Danish pastry?

h) What would you like to drink?

 

Exercise 3.5. Now you play the part of the waiter / waitress taking an order:

C. — Good morning!

You —

С. — Yes. I am. I'll have orange juice, please.

You —

С. — I don't think I want any cereal. I'll have one of your fruit dishes. Let me see. What have you got?

You —

С. — Right, I'll have the fruit salad. Then I'll have boiled eggs.

You —

C. — Oh, nothing, thanks. I'll have them on their own. And what drinks do you have?

You —

C. — OK. I'll have decaffeinated coffee. Right! Thanks very much.
