Юлиус Пайвио и еще около тридцати канадцев, которые были военнопленными в Испании, вернулись в Канаду в мае 1939. Они были последними канадскими добровольцами, вернувшимися домой. Их возвращение не прошло незамеченным. Как было с каждой маленькой группой вернувшейся домой, они были встречены семьями и друзьями.

В Галифаксе, Монреале, Торонто, Виннепеге, Ванкувере — где бы ветераны не выходили из поездов или кораблей, толпы людей приветствовали их. Естественно, самая крупная встречи произошла, когда группа с наибольшим количеством ветеранов прибыла в наиболее населенный город.

5 февраля 1939 г. 272 человека под командой Эдварда Сесиля Смита прибыли на Торонто Юнион стайшн. Более десяти тысяч человек, невзирая на холодную зимнюю ночь, приветствовали их возвращение. Это была дикая, бурная сцена, когда каждый старался коснуться добровольцев.

Семьи тех, кто пропал, старались узнать что-нибудь о них. Слишком часто сведения, которые они получали, приносили только горе, как было в случае родителей Томаса Бекета.

Майор Эдвард Сесил Смит (стоит) обращается к десятитысячной толпе, заполнившей Юинон стейшн в Торонто, пришедшей приветствовать первую группу канадских добровольцев, вернувшихся домой.

После бесконечных месяц в надежде найти доказательства, что их сын — первый канадец, погибший в Испании — может находиться в какой-нибудь забытой тюрьме, эта весть разбила им сердце.

Понадобилось три часа, что бы успокоить толпу и произнести неизбежные речи. Там не было никаких сообщений от федерального правительства, что бы их прочитать, не было и представителей правительства, что бы произнести речь. Единственными представителями правительства была небольшая группа из Королевской канадской конной полиции, которая фотографировала и что-то записывала, разыскивая даже теперь подрывные элементы среди ветеранов.

Смит говорил от имени добровольцев. Это была вдумчивая речь о природе конфликта и о тех, кто ответил на призыв.

Достопочтенный Салем Бланд, известный методистский социальный реформатор, говорил последним. В одном предложении он уловил суть опыта шестнадцати сотен канадцев, которые послужили делу столетия: «Канада сначала не понимала, что вы делаете, но понимает теперь, а по прошествии времени вы будете иметь больше друзей, больше почестей, потому что вы сделали одно из наиболее доблестных дел, сделанных в истории».
