suggestion [sq`GesC(q)n] bally [`bxlI] foolishness [`fHlISnIs]

The only one who was not struck with the suggestion was Montmorency. He never did care for the river, did Montmorency.

"It's all very well for you fellows," he says; "you like it, but I don't. There's nothing for me to do. Scenery is not in my line, and I don't smoke. If I see a rat, you won't stop; and if I go to sleep, you get fooling about with the boat, and slop me overboard. If you ask me, I call the whole thing bally foolishness."

We were three to one, however, and the motion was carried.

WE pulled out the maps, and discussed plans (мы вытащили карты и обсудили планы).

We arranged to start on the following Saturday from Kingston (мы договорились отправиться /в путешествие/ в следующую субботу от Кингстона). Harris and I would go down in the morning (Гаррис и я спустимся /туда/ утром), and take the boat up to Chertsey (и приведем лодку вверх до Чертси), and George, who would not be able to get away from the City till the afternoon (а Джордж, который не сможет выбраться из Сити до полудня; the City — Сити, деловой центр Лондона) (George goes to sleep at a bank from ten to four each day, except Saturdays, when they wake him up and put him outside at two) (Джордж засыпает = спит в банке с десяти до четырех каждый день, кроме суббот, когда его будят и выставляют /за дверь/ в два; to put out — выгонять; устранять; выставлять; outside — снаружи, извне; вовне, наружу), would meet us there (встретит нас там).

WE pulled out the maps, and discussed plans.

We arranged to start on the following Saturday from Kingston. Harris and I would go down in the morning, and take the boat up to Chertsey, and George, who would not be able to get away from the City till the afternoon (George goes to sleep at a bank from ten to four each day, except Saturdays, when they wake him up and put him outside at two), would meet us there.

Should we "camp out" or sleep at inns (следует ли нам ночевать на открытом воздухе или в гостиницах; inn — гостиница, постоялый двор, трактир)?

George and I were for camping out (Джордж и я были за ночевку на воздухе). We said it would be so wild and free, so patriarchal like (мы сказали, это будет так дико и свободно, так патриархально; like — аналогичный, подобный).

Slowly the golden memory of the dead sun fades from the hearts of the cold, sad clouds (медленно золотое воспоминание о безжизненном солнце исчезает из сердец холодных, печальных облаков; dead — мертвый, умерший; безжизненный, потухший; to fade — увядать, угасать; тускнеть; постепенно исчезать, расплываться). Silent, like sorrowing children, the birds have ceased their song (безмолвные, словно печальные дети, птицы прекратили свою песню; to sorrow — горевать, печалиться; to cease — переставать, прекращать/ся/), and only the moorhen's plaintive cry and the harsh croak of the corncrake (и только заунывный крик куропатки и резкое карканье коростеля; moorhen — самка шотландской куропатки; moor — вересковая торфянистая местность; hen — курица; самка птицы; plaintive — горестный, печальный, жалобный; harsh — грубый, жесткий; резкий, неприятный) stirs the awed hush around the couch of waters (нарушают благоговейную тишину над гладью вод; to stir — шевелить/ся/; размешивать; волновать; awe —благоговейный страх, трепет; couch — слой, пласт, ложе), where the dying day breathes out her last (где умирающий день испускает последний вздох; to breathe one's last breath — испустить последний вздох, умереть).

patriarchal [,peItrI`Rk(q)l] ceased [sJst] corncrake [`kLnkreIk] couch [kauC]

Should we "camp out" or sleep at inns?

George and I were for camping out. We said it would be so wild and free, so patriarchal like.

Slowly the golden memory of the dead sun fades from the hearts of the cold, sad clouds. Silent, like sorrowing children, the birds have ceased their song, and only the moorhen's plaintive cry and the harsh croak of the corncrake stirs the awed hush around the couch of waters, where the dying day breathes out her last.

From the dim woods on either bank (из потускневшего леса на обоих берегах; dim — тусклый, неяркий, потускневший; either — каждый, любой /из двух/; и тот и другой), Night's ghostly army, the grey shadows, creep out with noiseless tread (призрачная армия Ночи — серые тени — выползают бесшумно: «с бесшумной поступью») to chase away the lingering rear-guard of the light (чтобы разогнать медлительный арьергард света; to chase — преследовать, гнаться; разгонять, выгонять; lingering — медлительный, долгий; затяжной), and pass, with noiseless, unseen feet (и пройти беззвучными, невидимыми шагами), above the waving river-grass, and through the sighing rushes (над колышущейся осокой и через вздыхающий камыш; to wave — развеваться, колыхаться, качаться; river-grass — флюминея; river — река; grass — трава); and Night, upon her sombre throne (Ночь на своем мрачном троне), folds her black wings above the darkening world (складывает черные крылья над темнеющим миром = окутывает черными крыльями темнеющий мир), and, from her phantom palace, lit by the pale stars, reigns in stillness (и из своего призрачного дворца, освещенного бледными звездами, правит в тишине).

Then we run our little boat into some quiet nook (затем мы отводим нашу маленькую лодку в укромный уголок), and the tent is pitched, and the frugal supper cooked and eaten (палатка поставлена, а скромный ужин приготовлен и съеден; to pitch a tent — ставить палатку; to eat). Then the big pipes are filled and lighted (потом длинные трубки наполнены = набиты и зажжены), and the pleasant chat goes round in musical undertone (приятная беседа ведется мелодичным шепотом; chat — дружеский разговор, беседа; болтовня; to go round — вращаться, кружиться; undertone — пониженный голос; полутон, оттенок); while, in the pauses of our talk, the river, playing round the boat (в перерывах нашего разговора река, играя вокруг лодки), prattles strange old tales and secrets (рассказывает удивительные старинные сказки и тайны; to prattle — лепетать; журчать), sings low the old child's song that it has sung so many thousand years (поет негромко старую детскую песню, которую поет /уже/ столько тысяч лет) — will sing so many thousand years to come (/и/ будет петь еще тысячи лет; to come /после существительных/ — грядущий, будущий), before its voice grows harsh and old (пока ее голос не станет грубым и старческим) — a song that we, who have learnt to love its changing face (песню, которую мы, те, кто научился любить ее /реки/ изменчивый лик), who have so often nestled on its yielding bosom (те, кто так часто уютно устраивался на ее мягкой груди; yielding — мягкий, податливый; пружинистый, упругий; bosom — грудь, пазуха; лоно), think, somehow, we understand (думаем, почему-то, /что/ понимаем), though we could not tell you in mere words the story that we listen to (хотя мы не смогли бы рассказать словами повесть, которую слушаем; mere — просто, всего лишь).

From the dim woods on either bank, Night's ghostly army, the grey shadows, creep out with noiseless tread to chase away the lingering rear-guard of the light, and pass, with noiseless, unseen feet, above the waving river-grass, and through the sighing rushes; and Night, upon her sombre throne, folds her black wings above the darkening world, and, from her phantom palace, lit by the pale stars, reigns in stillness.

Then we run our little boat into some quiet nook, and the tent is pitched, and the frugal supper cooked and eaten. Then the big pipes are filled and lighted, and the pleasant chat goes round in musical undertone; while, in the pauses of our talk, the river, playing round the boat, prattles strange old tales and secrets, sings low the old child's song that it has sung so many thousand years — will sing so many thousand years to come, before its voice grows harsh and old — a song that we, who have learnt to love its changing face, who have so often nestled on its yielding bosom, think, somehow, we understand, though we could not tell you in mere words the story that we listen to.

And we sit there, by its margin (и /вот/ мы сидим там, у берега = на ее берегу; margin — приграничная полоса; берег, кромка), while the moon, who loves it too, stoops down to kiss it with a sister's kiss (в то время как луна, которая тоже ее любит, склоняется, чтобы поцеловать ее сестринским поцелуем; to stoop — наклонять/ся/, нагибать/ся/), and throws her silver arms around it clingingly (и бросает свои серебряные руки вокруг нее = обнимает ее крепко серебряными руками; to cling — цепляться, прилипать; clinging — цепкий, облегающий); and we watch it as it flows, ever singing, ever whispering, out to meet its king, the sea (мы наблюдаем, как она течет, постоянно напевая, постоянно шепча, чтобы встретить своего властелина — море; king — король; монарх, повелитель, царь) — till our voices die away in silence, and the pipes go out (пока наши голоса не замирают в тишине, а трубки не гаснут; to die away — затухать, угасать; to go out — догореть, погаснуть) — till we, common-place, everyday young men enough (пока мы, заурядные, довольно обычные молодые люди; common-place — банальный, ничем не примечательный; common — общий; обыкновенный; place — место, местоположение), feel strangely full of thoughts, half sad, half sweet (не чувствуем себя необыкновенно полными мыслей = нас переполняют мысли, полупечальные, полуприятные; sweet — сладкий; приятный, милый), and do not care or want to speak (и /нам/ не хочется говорить; to care — проявлять интерес, заботиться; иметь желание) — till we laugh, and, rising, knock the ashes from our burnt-out pipes, and say "Good-night" (смеемся и, поднимаясь, выбиваем пепел из погасших трубок, говорим «спокойной ночи»; to knock — ударять, бить, стучать; to burn out — выжигать, прогорать, сгорать дотла), and, lulled by the lapping water and the rustling trees (и, убаюканные плещущейся водой и шелестящими деревьями; to lap — завертывать, окружать; плескаться), we fall asleep beneath the great, still stars (мы засыпаем под большими безмолвными звездами), and dream that the world is young again (и нам снится, что мир снова молод = земля снова молода) — young and sweet as she used to be ere the centuries of fret and care had furrowed her fair face (молода и прекрасна, как она была до того, /как/ столетия волнений и тревог избороздили морщинами ее привлекательное лицо; to furrow — проводить борозды; покрывать морщинами; fret — раздражение, волнение), ere her children's sins and follies had made old her loving heart (до того, как грехи и прихоти ее детей состарили: «сделали старым» ее любящее сердце; folly — недальновидность, глупость, безумие, блажь) — sweet as she was in those bygone days when, a new-made mother (прекрасна, как она была в те минувшие дни, когда /словно/ молодая мать; new-made — недавно сделанный, новый, свежий), she nursed us, her children, upon her own deep breast (она взращивала нас, своих детей, на глубокой = широкой груди; to nurse — выкармливать, нянчить, лелеять) — ere the wiles of painted civilization had lured us away from her fond arms (прежде, чем обман нагримированной/ненастоящей цивилизации выманил нас из ее нежных объятий; wile — хитрость, уловка; обман; to lure — завлекать, соблазнять; выманивать; fond — нежный, любящий), and the poisoned sneers of artificiality had made us ashamed of the simple life we led with her (и ядовитые насмешки искусственности заставили нас стыдиться простой жизни, /которую/ мы вели с ней; to lead), and the simple, stately home where mankind was born so many thousands years ago (и простого, величественного жилища, где человечество родилось столько тысяч лет назад; stately home — старинный помещичий дом, замок, представляющий исторический интерес).

Harris said:
"How about when it rained (а что, если пойдет дождь; how about — как насчет)?"

You can never rouse Harris (никогда нельзя вывести Гарриса из себя; to rouse — пробуждать/ся/; вызывать /какие-либо эмоции/, возбуждать /интерес и т.д./). There is no poetry about Harris (в Гаррисе нет поэтичности; poetry — поэзия, стихи; поэтичность) — no wild yearning for the unattainable (нет буйного порыва к недостижимому; yearning — сильное желание, острая тоска; to attain — достигать; добиваться). Harris never "weeps, he knows not why (Гаррис никогда не «плачет, не зная почему»)." If Harris's eyes fill with tears (если глаза Гарриса наполняются слезами), you can bet it is because Harris has been eating raw onions (можете биться об заклад: это оттого, /что/ Гаррис ел /только что/ сырой лук), or has put too much Worcester over his chop (или полил слишком много острого соуса на свою отбивную/котлету; Worcester sauce — вустерский соус, острая соевая приправа /к мясу, рыбе/).

If you were to stand at night by the sea-shore with Harris, and say (если бы вы стояли ночью на берегу моря с Гаррисом и сказали бы):
"Hark (чу; hark — слушай! чу!)! do you not hear (разве ты не слышишь)? Is it but the mermaids singing deep below the waving waters (может, это русалки поют глубоко под волнующимися водами = в глубине); or sad spirits, chanting dirges for white corpses, held by seaweed (или печальные духи поют погребальную песнь бледным трупам = утопленникам, опутанным водорослями; to chant — петь, воспевать; монотонно говорить; dirge — панихида; похоронное пение; to hold — держать/ся/, удерживать/ся/)?" Harris would take you by the arm, and say (Гаррис взял бы вас за руку и сказал бы):

"I know what it is, old man (я знаю, что такое /с тобой/, старина); you've got a chill (ты простудился; you've = you have; to get; chill — простуда, озноб). Now, you come along with me (пойдем-ка со мной). I know a place round the corner here (я знаю одно место здесь за углом/поблизости), where you can get a drop of the finest Scotch whisky you ever tasted (где можно достать = выпить немного самого лучшего шотландского виски, /что/ ты когда-либо пробовал; drop — капля; небольшое количество спиртного) — put you right in less than no time (/это/ приведет тебя в порядок в два счета; in less than no time — в мгновение ока, мигом)."

Harris always does know a place round the corner (Гаррис всегда знает местечко за углом) where you can get something brilliant in the drinking line (где можно достать что-нибудь замечательное в плане выпивки; brilliant — блестящий, искрящийся; примечательный; line — линия, ряд; серия изделий; область интересов). I believe that if you met Harris up in Paradise (думаю, что если бы вы вдруг встретили Гарриса в Раю; to meet up — неожиданно встречать) (supposing such a thing likely) (допуская, /что/ подобная вещь вероятна), he would immediately greet you with (он тотчас же встретил бы вас /словами/):
"So glad you've come, old fellow (так рад, /что/ вы пришли, старина); I've found a nice place round the corner here (я нашел хорошее местечко здесь за углом; to find), where you can get some really first-class nectar (где можно достать действительно первоклассный нектар)."

In the present instance, however, as regarded the camping out (в данном случае, однако, в отношении ночевки на открытом воздухе; present — данный, настоящий; to regard — расценивать, рассматривать; принимать во внимание), his practical view of the matter came as a very timely hint (его практический взгляд на дело стал очень своевременным советом; view — точка зрения, мнение, взгляд; to come — приходить, прибывать; представляться; появляться; hint — намек; совет, подсказка). Camping out in rainy weather is not pleasant (ночевка = ночевать на открытом воздухе в дождливую погоду неприятно).

It is evening (вечер). You are wet through (вы промокли насквозь), and there is a good two inches of water in the boat (и в лодке добрых два дюйма воды; inch — дюйм /2, 54 см/), and all the things are damp (и все вещи отсырели; damp — сырой, влажный). You find a place on the banks that is not quite so puddly as other places you have seen (вы находите место на берегах, которое не так покрыто лужами, как другие места, /которые/ вы видели = где меньше луж; puddle — лужа), and you land and lug out the tent (причаливаете к берегу и выволакиваете палатку; to lug — волочить, тащить), and two of you proceed to fix it (и двое из вас начинают устанавливать ее; to proceed — приступать, приниматься; to fix — устанавливать, закреплять).

It is soaked and heavy, and it flops about (она пропитана /водой/ и тяжела, хлопает /краями/; to flop — шлепать/ся/; хлопать крыльями; полоскаться /о парусах/), and tumbles down on you, and clings round your head and makes you mad (падает на вас, обматывается вокруг вашей головы и сводит вас с ума: «делает сумасшедшим»; to cling — цепляться; прилипать). The rain is pouring steadily down all the time (дождь льет непрерывно, все время). It is difficult enough to fix a tent in dry weather (достаточно сложно установить палатку в сухое время): in wet, the task becomes Herculean (/а/ в сырую, эта задача становится необычайно сложной: «геркулесовой»). Instead of helping you, it seems to you that the other man is simply playing the fool (вместо того, чтобы помогать, вам кажется, что другой человек /ваш товарищ/ просто валяет дурака). Just as you get your side beautifully fixed (как раз когда вы превосходно закрепили свою сторону), he gives it a hoist from his end, and spoils it all (он поднимает ее: «дает ей подъем» со своего конца = дергает со своей стороны, и портит все).

"Here (эй)! what are you up to (что ты делаешь; to be up to — делать /обычно что-либо плохое/)?" you call out (кричите вы; to call out — выкрикивать, кричать).

"What are you up to (а что ты делаешь)?" he retorts (отвечает он; to retort — резко возражать; отпарировать /колкость/); "leggo, can't you (пусти же; leggo = let go)?"

"Don't pull it (не тяни); you've got it all wrong, you stupid ass (ты все своротил/запутал, глупый осел; to get wrong — неправильно понимать; неправильно делать)!" you shout (кричите вы).

"No, I haven't (нет /ничего я не своротил/)," he yells back (он орет в ответ; to yell — вопить, кричать); "let go your side (отпусти свою сторону)!"

"I tell you you've got it all wrong (говорю тебе, ты все испортил)!" you roar, wishing that you could get at him (ревете вы, желая, чтобы вы могли добраться до него = жалея, что до него не добраться; to roar — реветь, орать; рычать); and you give your ropes a lug that pulls all his pegs out (и так дергаете за свои веревки, что это вырывает все его колышки = все колышки с его стороны; to lug — волочить, тянуть; сильно дергать).

"No, I haven't," he yells back; "let go your side!"

"I tell you you've got it all wrong!" you roar, wishing that you could get at him; and you give your ropes a lug that pulls all his pegs out.

"Ah, the bally idiot (проклятый идиот)!" you hear him mutter to himself (вы слышите, как он бормочет себе /под нос/); and then comes a savage haul, and away goes your side (затем следует яростный рывок, и ваш край срывается; savage — дикий, жестокий; свирепый; haul — волочение, тяга; рывок). You lay down the mallet and start to go round and tell him (вы кладете деревянный молоток и начинаете обходить /палатку/ и говорить ему) what you think about the whole business (что вы думаете обо всем этом /деле/), and, at the same time, he starts round in the same direction to come and explain his views to you (в это же время он начинает /двигаться/ в том же направлении, чтобы подойти и объяснить = изложить вам свои взгляды). And you follow each other round and round, swearing at one another (и вы ходите кругами: «следуете друг за другом по кругу», ругая друг друга), until the tent tumbles down in a heap (пока палатка не падает кучей), and leaves you looking at each other across its ruins (и оставляет вас, смотрящих = а вы стоите и смотрите друг на друга поверх ее развалин; across — поперек; сквозь, через; напротив), when you both indignantly exclaim, in the same breath (и оба негодующе восклицаете, в один голос; breath — дыхание; вздох):
"There you are (вот видишь; there you are — ну вот; ну что? вот что получилось)! what did I tell you (что я тебе говорил)?"

Meanwhile the third man, who has been baling out the boat (тем временем третий человек, который /все это время/ вычерпывал воду из лодки), and who has spilled the water down his sleeve (и налил себе воды в рукав; to spill — проливать/ся/, разливать/ся/), and has been cursing away to himself steadily for the last ten minutes (и ругался беспрерывно последние десять минут; to curse — сквернословить; ругаться; проклинать; to oneself — про себя), wants to know what the thundering blazes you're playing at (спрашивает: «хочет знать», во что, черт побери, вы играете; thunder — гром; черт возьми; go to thunder! — иди к черту!/; blaze — яркий огонь, пламя; blazes — ад, преисподняя /в усилительных выражениях/), and why the blamed tent isn't up yet (и почему проклятая палатка до сих пор не стоит).

"Ah, the bally idiot!" you hear him mutter to himself; and then comes a savage haul, and away goes your side. And you follow each other round and round, swearing at one another, until the tent tumbles down in a heap, and leaves you looking at each other across its ruins, when you both indignantly exclaim, in the same breath:

Meanwhile the third man, who has been baling out the boat, and who has spilled the water down his sleeve, and has been cursing away to himself steadily for the last ten minutes, wants to know what the thundering blazes you're playing at, and why the blamed tent isn't up yet.

At last, somehow or other (наконец, с горем пополам/так или иначе), it does get up, and you land the things (она устанавливается, и вы выгружаете вещи). It is hopeless attempting to make a wood fire (бесполезно пытаться развести дровяной костер; hopeless — безнадежный, неисправимый; невозможно), so you light the methylated spirit stove, and crowd round that (поэтому вы зажигаете спиртовку и теснитесь вокруг нее; methylated spirit — денатурат, этиловый спирт; stove — печь, плита).

Rainwater is the chief article of diet at supper (дождевая вода — основное блюдо на ужин; chief — главный, основной; article — вещь, предмет; article of food — пищевой продукт). The bread is two-thirds rainwater (хлеб на две трети /состоит/ из дождевой воды), the beefsteak-pie is exceedingly rich in it (пирог с бифштексом = с мясом чрезвычайно богат ей), and the jam (варенье), and the butter (масло), and the salt (соль), and the coffee (кофе) have all combined with it to make soup (все соединились с ней, чтобы превратиться в суп).
