Неозначений артикль а вживається перед словами, що починаються з приголосної; тоді як йогографічний варіант an - перед словами, що починаються з голосної.

Неозначений артикль утворився від числівника one (один) і тому вживається тільки перед тими іменниками в однині, які мають форму множини і які можна перерахувати (a pencil, a ruler, an apple). Він передає лише вказівку на належність предмета до якогось класу однорідних предметів. Перед абстрактними і конкретними іменниками, які не мають форми множини, неозначений артикль не вживається.

Зокрема неозначений артикль вживається:

1. З іменником - іменною частиною складного присудка: Мy brother is a doctor.

2. З іменником - підметом після зворотів: there is, there was, there will be.

There is a table in the middle of the room. (Посередині кімнати стоїть стіл).

3. З додатком після дієслова have: I have a brother.

4. Перед іменниками в однині після слів such, rather, quite і т.д.:

She is such a good pupil.

5. Після слова what в окличних реченнях: What a good idea! Але: What beautiful music!

6. З деякими словами: a lot, a few (кілька), a little (трохи), a bit (трохи) та інші.

He speaks English a little- Він трохи розмовляє англійською.

7. У означенні числівника one (один) перед числівниками: a hundred - одна сотня, a thousand - одна тисяча, a million - один мільйон, a dozen - одна дюжина:

The library has a hundred books - Бібліотека налічує сто книг.

They have three meals a day- Вони їдять тричі на день.

Перед абстрактними і конкретними іменниками, які не мають форми множини, артикль не вживається.

Означений артикль

Означений артикль має одну форму the, але вимовляється перед словами, котрі починаються з приголосної як [¶], а перед словами, котрі починаються з голосної, як [¶i]: the book, the apple. Означений артикль походить від вказівного займенника that. Цей артикль вживається перед іменниками в однині й у множині.

Означений артикль the використовується для позначення певного, вже відомого чи згадуваного раніше предмета або поняття, а також тоді, коли предмет чи явище уточнюються контекстом чи ситуацією.

Означений артикль вживається:

1. Коли перед іменником стоїть:

а) порядковий числівник - He was the first to come. (він прийшов перший);

б) прикметник у вищому ступені - This is the most beautiful flower (Це найкрасивіша квітка);

в) один з прикметників last, next, same, following: Answer the following questions (Дайте відповіді на такі питання.)

Але: next door (сусідній будинок; сусідня кімната), next week (month, summer, year, Sunday). (наступного тижня (місяця, літа, року, наступної неділі). last week (month, year, Saturday). (минулого тижня, місяця, року, минулої суботи) та ін.

2. Перед іменником, за яким йде уточнення: This is the man I told you about (це чоловік, про якого я вам розповідав).

3. З іменниками, що означають предмети, єдині у своєму роді: the earth, the sun, the moon, the world, the sky та ін.

4. У виразах: in the afternoon (після обіду), in the evening (у вечері), in the morning (вранці), on the left (ліворуч), on the right (праворуч), the other day (днями) та ін.

5. У виразах типу the more... the better... (чим більше...тим краще...), наприклад:

The more we learn, the more we know (чим більше ми вчимось, тим більше знаємо).

6. Перед прізвищами, коли мається на увазі вся сім’я, всі члени певної сім’ї. У цьому випадку прізвище ставиться у формі множини: the Browns (сім’я Браунів, Брауни).

7. Перед назвою більшості газет і пароплавів: the Daily Mail, the News from Ukraine, the Guardian.

8. Перед назвами народів (іменником у формі множини або прикметником): the Ukrainians (українці), the Americans (американці), the Chinese (китайці), the English (англійці).

8. Перед прикметниками і дієприкметниками, які вживаються як іменники, у значенні множини: the poor (бідні), the unemployed (безробітні).

9. Перед назвами деяких країн: the U.S.A (США), the Netherlands (Нідерланди), the United Kingdom (Об’єднане Королівство).

10. Перед назвами річок, гірських хребтів, півостровів, морів, океанів, архіпелагів: the Dnipro (Дніпро), the Thames (Темза), the Crimea (Крим), the Black Sea (Чорне море), the Atlantic Ocean (Атлантичний океан).

11. Перед необчислюваними іменниками в тих випадках, коли мається на увазі обмежена, певна кількість речовини:

Give me the bread, please. Дайте мені, будь ласка, хліба (тобто мається на увазі певна кількість чи дана кількість).

The water is frozen. Вода (тобто вода, про яку йде мова) замерзла.

Але: Water is a liquid. Вода (тобто вода взагалі) - рідина.

12. Перед іменниками в однині, коли останній означає цілий клас предметів:

The rose is a beautiful flower. Троянда - красива квітка.

Означений артикль не вживається:

1. Перед званнями, формами звернення, якщо за ними йде прізвище:

Professor Snow, Mister Morgan.

2. Перед іменником-доповненням до присудку, що виражений дієсловом to elect, to appoint. He was elected chairman.

3. Перед назвами міст, вулиць, площ: London, Trafalgar Square, Oxford Street (але the Hague, the Red Square).

4. Перед назвами місяців, днів, пір року: in April, on Wednesday, in summer.

Але: якщо мова йде про частину певного року, то перед назвою пори року ставиться означений артикль: in the winter of 1992.

5. Перед абстрактними і речовинними іменниками, яких не можна перерахувати і які вживаються в загальному значенні: freedom (воля), metal (метал).

6. Перед власними іменами: Victor, Andrew, Kovalenko, Webster.

7. Перед назвами країн, географічних місцевостей: Canada, Africa та ін.

8. Перед словами breakfast (сніданок), lunch (ланч), dinner (обід), supper (вечеря), вжитих у загальному значенні.

We have breakfast at 8 o’clock. Ми снідаємо о восьмій.

9. У деяких виразах: at night (уночі), by tram, (train, plane, ship) та ін. (трамваєм, потягом, літаком), from morning till night (з ранку до вечора), to go to bed (лягти спати), day after day (день за днем), by heart (напам’ять), to go to school (ходити до школи), at home (вдома) та ін.
