ОБ АВТОРЕ

Вилейанур С. Рамачандран является директором Центра исследования мозга и познавательных способностей, профессором психологического факультета и программы нейробиологии Калифорнийского университета, Сан-Диего, а также адъюнкт-профессором биологии в институте Солка.

Рамачандран получил медицинское образование и впоследствии степень доктора наук в Тринити-колледже в Кембридже. Его ранняя работа была посвящена зрительному восприятию, однако он более известен своими экспериментами в области поведенческой неврологии, которые, несмотря на свою крайнюю простоту, весьма сильно повлияли на наши представления о мозге. Ричард Докинз назвал его «Марко Поло современности», а нобелевский лауреат Эрик Р. Кендел «современным Полем Брока».

В 2005 году Рамачандран был награжден медалью Генри Дейла и избран пожизненным почетным членом Королевского института Великобритании. Другие его награды включают в себя членство в колледже Всех Святых, две почетные докторские степени, ежегодную премию Рамона- и-Кахаля Международной психоневрологической ассоциации и медаль Аренса Капперса Нидерландской Королевской академии наук. В 2003 году он прочел годичный цикл рейтовских лекций на Би-би-си, первый цикл которых был прочтен в 1949 году Бертраном Расселом. В 1995 году он прочел цикл из 10 лекций, посвященных работе мозга, на праздновании 25летней годовщины Общества нейробиологии. Совсем недавно президент Индии присудил ему третью высшую гражданскую награду страны Падма Бхушан.

Получившая широкое признание книга Рамачандрана Phantoms in the Brain послужила основой для двухсерийного фильма на канале PBS. Он появлялся в «Шоу Чарли Роуза», a Newsweek включила его имя в «Клуб века» список из ста наиболее значимых людей прошедшего столетия, достойных внимания.
