In 1989 Glafira Fedorovna Stakheeva, a Elabuga merchant wife and an honorary citizen, subscribed to the building of the Diocesan School for Girls in memory of her husband. It took the architect I. A. Charushin 4 years to build the school and in August, 15, 1904 the work was finished. The girls were taught religion, several foreign languages, music, and etiquette. They graduated from school with the qualification of a tutor who could teach children at home. Those who wanted to teach at church schools had to attend extra classes where they were taught History, Physics, Math’s, and other appropriate and relevant subjects.

During the Second World War (1941-1945) Voronezh and Leningrad Universities were evacuated to Elabuga. This enabled Russian scientists to continue valuable research and by doing so contributed much to Russian science. Among the famous scientists that worked there were the members of the Academy V. I. Smirnov, V. A. Fock, the future academician V. A. Ambartzumyan, and many others.

In 1952 the college was transformed into Elabuga State Teacher’s Training College. As the years passed demand for student places increased, this resulted in an increased demand for more faculties to be created.

Modern Period

In 2003 the college was renamed into Elabuga State Teacher’s Training University and in 2011 it joined Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University. Elabuga Institute of KFU is considered to be one of the leading scientific and educational centers of Russia.
