THE PREREQUISITES AND PROSPECTS OF FERROUS METALLURGY COMPLEX DEVELOPMENT IN EASTERN SIBERIA AND IRKUTSK OBLAST

Abstract. Eastern Siberia is rich in mineral resources required for the ferrous metallurgy complex development. Within its territory there are large reserves of iron ore of various geological and industrial types; deposits of manganese, titanium, tantalum and niobium which are used as alloying elements and considered indispensable for high quality steel production. The necessary resource base of nonmetallic materials such as large deposits of magnetite, foundry sand and flux components is explored. The article describes the history of the metallurgical industry development in Eastern Siberia in detail. Special attention is paid to the prospects of an East Siberian metallurgical plant establishment and the regional resource base required for its efficient performance. Its technical and economic performance indicators are provided. It is stressed that the region possesses all necessary conditions, namely, energy capacities and various raw materials, in order to create a titanium-magnesium plant and an electro-metallurgical industrial complex for high quality ferroalloys and electrical steel production.
