Sample observation task for school experience

Task 1: Language learner types and learning styles

Make sure you know the learners’ names. Observe the learners and complete the table with their names. Be ready to talk about your findings in the next class.

  takes the initiative, volunteers to answer questions, and asks questions of his/her own
  avoids answering the questions, or answers if called on by name, does not participate in class activities actively
  takes active part in pair work and group work
  is not afraid of making mistakes
  is reluctant to speak
  catches on quickly and follows explanations relatively easily
  often gets confused and frequently seeks clarification from peers

 

Task 2: Learning strategies

Observe a class and monitor one or two learners during a lesson while they perform a classroom activity. Describe the learning strategies each learner seems to be employing while completing the activity. Compare your observation notes with those made by another person observing the same learner.

How similar are your accounts of the strategies learners seemed to employ?  
Do you think the learners were using effective learning strategies? Why? Provide examples.
