Information theory in stylistics

Nowadays, some methods and concepts of such sciences as cybernetics, formal and informal theory are adopted in stylistics. Application of some concepts of information theory in stylistics proved to be especially useful. The main concept of this theory is the concept of information.

There are 2 kinds of information in semantics of an utterance:

· Denotative (main information)

· Connotative (additional information)

Denotative information is the subject of information itself. It doesn’t depend upon the act of communication and it names the notion of reality as it is.

Connotative information depends upon the active communication. It is conditioned by the attitude of the speaker to the subject of speech or to the addressee. It conveys speaker’s membership to this or that social group. It conveys his emotional state at the moment of speech.
