Departments of Defectology

Departments of Defectology are part of the Academy of Pedagog­ical 1) Sci__nces and established to train teachers and conduct 2) rese__rch on various problems concerned with the education of the 3) bl__nd, the mentally 4) ret__rded, the deaf and the 5) spe__ch defective, as well as on various features of 6) p_ysical characteristics of normal children. There are doctors, physiologists, educators and 7) met_odologists attached to the department.

Departments of Defectology have the 1) ________of establish­ing special schools for the Ministry of 2) _______ and for planning their curricula. They prepare special 3) _______ and texts for handi­capped and for their 4) _______. Each department of the deaf has the following 5) _______: theory of teaching the deaf; theory of teaching the partially 6) _______; phonetic and acoustic laboratory; psychology of the deaf and 7) _________teaching laboratory.

Children 1) (with, by) disabilities are generally discovered at an early age. During the 2) (childs’, child's) first year, a special course in methods of bringing up a handicapped child is given to the parents. Later special seminar meetings 3) (hold, are held) regularly at the special schools for parents. For children aged from one to 4) (third, three) there are special nurseries for the deaf; for those of ages three to seven 5) (there is, there are) special kindergartens. At about age seven the future course of the child's education 6) (decides, is decided) by a committee of doctors, neurophysiologists, pediatricians, teachers and speech pathologists. Depending on the child's speech and mental development, he is sent to one of the special elementary schools.
