3. What is the general mood of the composition? What emotions does
it stir? Does it seem lifelike? Why?

 

4. What strikes you in the arrangements of things? (in the foreground,
in the left (right) foreground)

5. In what way is the background peculiar? Does it also help to
convey the mood of the composition? Doesn't it help to learn the
life of the people & make us feel their presence?

6. What details make us feel the touch of a human hand?

7. Conclude the description pointing out why the picture appeals
to you (or why it doesn't).


LANDSCAPE PAINT1NG

the dreamy calm (tranquillity) & lyricism of (Russian) nature;

the charm of its restrained colours;

refined, subtle, lyrical, pensive, plaintive landscape;

boundless fields, the endless width of fields, vast forest expanses, a sweep of meadows;

IMPRESSIONISM

in order to show the mutable, transient quality of light some of the impressionists used a technique of putting strokes, dots, dashes separately:

the motif & effect desired by the artist only become evident when viewed from a certain distance:
