My native town (Zhlobin) № 11
There are many beautiful cities and towns in the world. I’d like to visit some of them and see with my own eyes what I’ve read or heard about. But an English proverb says “There is no place like home”. So my home town is Zhlobin in Gomel region. I live here with my parents and it is a wonderful place to live.
First of all I’d like to tell some common information about my native town. It is situated on the right bank of the river Dnieper. The population of the town is about 80 thousand citizens. Zhlobin is governed by a council. The municipality is headed by the mayor of the town. We have a twin city in Italy and keep close contacts with our friends abroad.
Zhlobin was first mentioned in the 15th century (1492) as a small settlement. Many times I thought of the origin of the name of my town and once I’ve found out that before the settlement stayed on plenty of swamps and lots of people were lost because of them. That’s why first it was called ‘’Zloe mesto”, then “Zlobin”, after the influence of polish invaders the town was called Zhlobin. Unfortunately, several times our town was destroyed completely. Years and wars passed by, the town was built and rebuilt. And very soon Zhlobin became a highly industrialized area, especially when the Belorussian Steel Works was built in 1984. Of course, there are some other factories, such as Artificial Fur Factory, milk and meat factories. Lots of new buildings and shopping malls are built every year. For example, Evroopt, New continent. Zhlobin is an important railway junction as well.
If you want to spend your free time outdoors there are lots of cosy cafes and restaurants, you can also go to the swimming pools and skate in ice palace, go to the cinema or dance all night in “Zhlondon”.
Compare with other cities my home town is rather small, nevertheless it has a great meaning for me, because it is the place where I was born, where I’ve got my first friends and family. And as I have already said I think it is a wonderful place to live.
