Trip to Burgh Island” topic-based lesson plan

Introduction

I am going to present a topic-based activity “Trip to Burgh Island”. I think that this approach gives a clearer picture of what is to be taught and it is easier for the teacher to organize the language goals around this topic.

Explanation

The activity is designed for the tenth grade. Students need to know vocabulary on the theme “Travelling”, different kinds of transport, how to use ‘present perfect’, ‘present simple’, ‘passive voice’ and should have good speaking and writing skills.

■The teacher shows them a picture of Burgh Island to introduce the topic “Trip to Burgh Island”.

■Then the teacher brainstorms the students to organize the vocabulary they know around the topic.

■The students are told they are going to prepare a trip abroad themselves and for that they will have to think about all the details.

* How do you travel on holiday?

*What is your favourite way to travel? Why?

* Where can you go on holiday?

*What do you take with yourselves?

*How can you get there?

*Where do you want to stay?

*What is the weather usually there?

* Are there many places of interest there?

* What will you do there?

Goals:

■To learn or revise vocabulary relating to travelling;

■To develop reading, writing and comprehension skills;

■To develop speaking skills/ discussing preferences and attitudes towards.

The lesson is divided in a series of activities to help students to discuss the place where this island is situated. At first students get A1sheets to predict partners’ preferences about travelling.

Then students get sheets of paper with the title of one of the questions above. On these ones they will write their ideas: Where can we go? – to the seaside, the mountains, to the island etc.

To prepare them for the reading exercises, they will brainstorm vocabulary about “Burgh island” and complete A2 with the title “Where is Burgh Island situated?”

The main focus of the lesson is a text based on interesting information indicating that Burgh Island is full of beautiful nature, silence, fresh air and, I think, of funny adventures. After students will complete A3 filling in the gaps.

Students will be asked questions relating to their comprehension of the text, and their opinions towards ideas in the text. They have the opportunity to describe travelling to Burgh Island.

The teacher should assist students.

■Finally they post the worksheets on the blackboard and together they organize the discussion about their journey.

Follow-up: The whole class takes part in writing the story of the imaginary trip: Wonderful Trip to England, using ‘to be going to’ to make a prediction about what they know/feel/see; ‘passive voice’ to describe the place where the island is situated; ‘comparative and superlative forms of adjectives’ to describe nature.

Learner Reaction:

Students are fond of the activity because it appealed to their creativity and imagination. They like the fact it reminded them of past travelling experiences as well. Learners practice the target vocabulary and improve the four skills, focus on the communication skills.

Read the sentences and then guess your partner’s answers to the true or false questions. True/False

  What is the name of the large building on Burgh Island?   What is the Pilchard?   Do tourists have a good time there?   What kind of activities can they take part in?
  How can tourists get to the island at high tide? Is the Sea Tractor an unusual vehicle? What is this vehicle used for? Do you know other unusual means of transport you have ever travelled by? Is it impossible to get to the island on foot?
