a. Speak about Julia’s meeting and conversation with Roger. How did Julia look that day? What was Julia anxious to know? What did Julia think about looking at Roger? What did Roger answer he was going to do in future? What was Roger sick and tired of? What did Roger reproach Julia of? What episode had once made a strong impression on Roger? What did Julia answer him? How did Julia feel when Roger asked her about Tom? What can you say about them both in this respect? What hurt Julia’s feelings most of all?

b. What did Julia and Michael speak about? How did Michael rehearse with Avice? What did Julia tell Charles about her conversation with Roger? What was his reaction? What upset Julia?

c. How did Julia feel on the day of the performance? How had she usually feel on a day like that before? Speak about her meeting with Tom. What did Julia discover and how did she feel about that? What change did Tom notice in Julia?

d. Speak about the first night. What dirty trick did Julia play on Avice? Did the latter deserve that? What did Michael tell Julia after the performance? Why did he think she had played that trick? e. How did Julia feel after the performance? Why did she feel like being alone? Where did she go? How did she give vent to her desires? What was Julia thinking about at dinner? Why did she think she could play better than she had done in the spring? What ideas came to her? What answer could she have given to Roger after the first night? What emotions overwhelmed her? What made her so happy?

IV. (to be prepared at home and reproduced in class). Comment on the following:

  1. “You could count on the fingers of one hand the actors who’ve sent their son to Eton.” (ch. 27)
