Plan

1. Parts of speech in the English Language. A short history. The traditional classification of words.

2. The problems of classifying words into word classes. An outline of the main difficulties in classifying words.

3. The syntactico-distributional classification of words.

4. The theory of three ranks (O. Jespersen).

5. Functional words and their properties in the light of

- the traditional classification of words

- the syntactico-distributional classification of words

- the mixed approach to the classification of words.

6. The modern approach to the problem of classifying words into parts of speech (the three-layer classification of words by M.Y. Bloch).

Questions and Tasks:

1. Disclose the meaning of the term ‘part of speech’.

2. What are the strong and the weak points of the traditional classification of words?

3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the syntactico-distributional classification of words?

4. Speak on the main principles of the three-layer classification of words.

5. What does the whole of the lexicon consist of?

6. Speak on the notional parts of speech.

7. Comment on the so-called ‘lexical paradigm of nomination’ and the role of suppletivity in it.

8. Comment on the functions of the words that belong to the so-called ‘second’ and ‘third’ layers.
