word wrap The word processing function that causes words that fall outside the right margin to be moved to the next line.

working directory The current directory or subdirectory in a hierarchical file system.

worksheet A computer spreadsheet.

workstation A terminal tied into a main­frame or minicomputer or a personal computer that allows a worker to process information.

worm A disruptive program that travels through the computer's memory, wiping out information in the process.

Write Once, Read Mostly (WORM) disk A type of optical storage that allows a user to write information onto the disk once and then read it as many times as needed.

write-protect notch A notch in the vinyl cover of the floppy disk that, when cov­ered, keeps the disk from being written on.

WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) A function of word processing that allows the user to see on the screen exactly what will be printed.

x-terminal A special type of workstation which uses high-resolution graphics to display subscripts and special symbols on the screen.
