PREDICTION THREE: Mankind Reloaded

A philosophy known as transhumanism supposes that the future may belong to unnatural selection. Humans might transcend their biological limitations via technology - cloning, genetic enhancement, robotics, artificial intelligence, and nanotechnology. Moreover, we will probably be able to transfer our consciousnesses to computers and become immortal. In addition to living forever, "uploaded" beings would be able to travel at the speed of light, think faster when running on advanced operating systems and cut their food budget down to zero, Nick Bostrom, director of the Future of Humanity Institute at the University of Oxford, imagines in his paper "The Transhumanist FAQ".

As a result, a new type of evolution should emerge. "Evolutionary selection could occur in a population of uploads. In fact, it might operate much faster there, because artificial intellects reproduce much faster," Mr Bostrom told National Geographic News. The current human generational cycle takes some 20 years, but a digitalized individual could replicate themselves in seconds or minutes, he pointed out.

Of course copying yourself won't be without complications. "Which copy is you?" Bostrom writes. "Who owns your property? Who is married to your spouse?"
