High season or not, Sochi is never quiet, buzzing as it is day and night. The old sounds of the seaside town at twilight are drowned out by the new sounds of bars and night clubs, and it wasn't until we came close that we hear the quiet whisper of waves, the rustle of palms and the noise of the market where churchela and oriental sweets are sold. On our first day, we de­cided to visit the Riviera, the leisure park in the very heart of Sochi. Visitors and lo­cal residents and their families mingle here to while away the hours. The park is famous for its cheery attractions, rides and rare species of jealously protected plants. But there is also an art market where you can find true master­pieces amongst the obligatory caricatures and prints. Local artists find it easy to create masterpieces here, since the landscape around them is a masterpiece in itself.

Nature lovers will enjoy the Yew and Box Tree Grove, in which a large area of Colchian forest has been preserved. Locals rather grandly call it a “museum of nature". Here, ancient species of plants have survived from before the ice age, and in many cases it is the only place in the world where they can be seen. The Grove is open to all, and you need only select your route carefully and not overestimate your abilities.

For fifteen years, the summer season in Sochi has begun with the Kinotavr Festival. This festival is appreciated not only by cinema lovers, but also by the thousands of tourists who flock to Sochi each year. We deliberately timed our trip to So­chi to coincide with this, the largest national cinema festival in Russia, to see the latest contributions to Russian and Western cine­ma. The red carpet was graced with the most popular stars of Russian cinema, who come to this sunny city to attend the opening ceremony: Rezo Gigineishvili, Svetlana Bondarchuk, Viktoria Tolstoganova, Oksana Fandera, Artem Tkachenko and Anton Tabakov.
