Nighttime Rendezvous

As soon as the blazing disc of the summer sun descends into the blue haze of the sea's horizon, Sochi twinkles with a thousand lights from its seasonal cafes and restaurants. We walked along the wharf, enjoying the cool evening air and the sound of the waves on the shore, and life seemed like a holiday that would go on forever.

There is entertainment to cater for every taste along the sea shore. We decided to spend our first evening in the calm and upmarket environment of one of the smart restaurants in the center of Sochi. Trained waiters served us a bottle of champagne in a silver bucket full of ice decorated with a freshly cut rose, drops of evening dew glistening on its petals, quiet classical music playing in the background...

If lower prices and good music in the cool of the night air are more your thing, then the city center and little coastal villages have thousands of small cozy cafes which pro­vide the enticing alternative…..

of sipping a glass of cool wine while smoking an aromatic hookah pipe.

Sochi is a great place for clubbers: the best DJs from Moscow and St. Petersburg come to spin their discs in Sochi for the summer every year. We danced to B-52, Posolstvo Yamaiky Vosmoe Nebo, Zodiac, Cleopatra, Lim­popo... Summer nights are lively in Sochi, with wild danc­ers, musicians and couples out for a stroll. When we finally return to our hotel, we smile like children as we drift off to sleep: tomorrow will be another summer's day.

Local Color

The mentality of Sochi's resi­dents is a whole topic on its own. The warm southern sun is to blame — it makes the locals hot headed, fiery and emotional. And the winding mountain roads are respon­sible for their complex minds and convoluted manner of speaking. Take the local cabbie. He can drive, smoke, talk on the phone and give you change, all at the same time. They're speed freaks here. A fast Russian ride with a Sochi spin on it. They're mad about tourists too. Tour­ists bring money, and many of those who live here were once tourists here them­selves. And although they are perhaps not the sea-faring people they once were, they are still innately good, and happy as children.
