A gold ring of Russia

- Where have you spent this summer?

- I have visited the tourist route called ‘A Gold Ring of Russia’.

- I heard that there are two routes. What cities do they include?

- The first route includes such ancient cities and towns as: Sergiev Possad, Pereslavl-Zalesky, Rostov the Veliky, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Ples, Vladimir, Bogolubovo, Suzdal and Uglich. The second route includes less cities and towns. They are Zagorsk, Pereslavl-Zalesky, Rostov, Kostroma, Suzdal and Vladimir. It was the route I visited in summer.

DIALOGUE 2

Rivers

-Which is the longest river in Russia: the Volga, the Ob, the Yenisei, the Lena or the Amur?

- Let me see. I know that the Amur in the Far East is not the longest.

- Can it be the Volga?

- I read [red] that the Volga is the biggest river in Europe, but I can’t say exactly.

- Let’s consult the encyclopedia. So, the longest river in Russia is the Ob. It flows from the south to the north.

DIALOGUE 3

Lakes

- Russia is rich in beautiful lakes. How do you think what Russian lake is the most famous?

- I suppose that Lake Baikal is the most famous in spite that it is not the largest lake.

- Why do you think so?

- The Caspian Sea is the largest lake but Lake Baikal is the deepest one. It has 23,600 cubic kilometers of fresh water, which are 20 per cent of the fresh water on the earth.

- And don’t forget about the Bolshoi Opera House, Temple of the Christ of the Rescuer and the Central Department Store (TSUM).

- OK.

DIALOGUE 5

Russian souvenirs

- I’m going to visit my pen-friend. He lives in Valetta, Malta. Can you help me to choose some souvenirs, please?

- OK. I’ll help you with pleasure. We’ve got matroyshka dolls, Gzel plates and dishes, Zhostovo trays, Khokhloma wooden things, Dymkovo earthen toys, decorations made of malachite and amber, Vologda lace, woodcarving and Palekh miniatures in our shop. How about these boxes made of birch bark?

- I’ll take a set of matroyshka dolls and these two boxes made of birch bark.

- Good choice!

- How much is that?

- That’s 1,000 rubles, please.

- Here you are. Thank you.
