Agent: Good morning! TOURS ARE US, Mandy speaking. How can I help you.

Customer: Good morning! I’d like some information about day tour to the mountains.

Agent: O.K. Are you interested in skiing or just seeing the snow, you know sightseeing?

Customer: Well, I don’t think we want to go skiing, but may be hiking or other activity.

Agent: Right. Let’s see! We have day trips every Saturday and Sunday.

Customer: What time do they start?

Agent: Umm…the coach leaves the city center at 6.30 a.m. and returns approximately 8 p.m.

Customer: A coach?

Agent: Yes. A luxury bus.

Customer: Oh! How long does it take to get there? I mean, how much time do we have in the snow?

Agent: Well, it takes about three and a half to get there and three and half hour to get back, so you have about six hours on the mountain.

Customer: That sounds good! Maybe there is time to go skiing.

Agent: For sure. But you need to make arrangements to ski before you go.

Customer: Oh, why?

Agent: So we can provide you a discount on ski lifts to the snow runs. If we make group booking it is actually cheaper for you.

Customer: O.K.! Now what about cost? How much is a day trip?

Agent: Well, if you don’t want to ski, it’s $75.

Customer: Does that include lunch?

Agent: Umm… no. But there is a stop about halfway to and from the mountain, and you get a voucher for tea or coffee and biscuits. You can take your own lunch, or on the mountain there’s a fantastic restaurant that offers a large variety of meals and snacks at reasonable prices.

Customer: That sound good! Is there a concession price for children?

Agent: No. I’m sorry it’s $75 for each passenger.

Customer: What if I want to ski? How much is that?

Agent: That’s…Let’s see… $125. That’s the coach, return trip, ski hire and boot hire and lift pass.

Customer: That sounds reasonable. How far in advance do I need to book?

Agent: At the moment, I can put you on the coach this weekend. Sorry, how many people do you want to book for?

Customer: Umm… I’m not sure if’t is four or six.

Agent: Well, if you want a group booking, I’m sure we can offer a discount of perhaps 5% - if you book and pay the deposit the week before you want to go.

Customer: Let me check $75 for a day trip?

Agent: Yes that’s right!

Customer: And $120 to go skiing?

Agent: $125, but with a 5% discount on a group booking you would pay less.

Customer: Well, thank you for your time and information. I’ll talk to my friends and call you with a date to make a booking. Sorry, what’s was you name again?

Agent: It’s Mandy. And can I have your name?

Customer: Yes, It’s Alex. Thanks Mandy. I’ll call you when I’ve spoken to my friends.

John: Good, what did you find out?

Alex: Well, it’s quite cheap really. We can go skiing for the day for $125 each.

John: $125 each. That’s great. The last travel agent I rang quoted $190 a person. What’s the catch?

Alex: Do you think Sam and Penny would like to come along?

John: Yeah, maybe. Why don’t you give them a call and ask? Have you already made a booking?

Alex: No, not yet. I told the agent I had to talk to you, guys, before I could make a booking. We’ll get a discount if we book and pay a deposit a week before we go.

To finish off airclass today I’d like to give you some facts and figures about one of the most successful commercial aircraft the 747. Air Pacific International Airlines fleet contains 26 747s, the biggest is the 747-400. Well, all our 747-400s I can figure with economy, business and first-class sitting arrangements, so typically our aircraft can hold up to 416 passengers. Our aircraft are fitted with proton witny engines which produce 291,57 kilo Newtons of thrust. 747 has a maximum take-off weight of 369,900 kilograms and a large proportion of the take-off weight is actually fuel, carrying 216,840 litres of fuel at take off. This sounds like a lot of fuel and it is. The 747 burns up approximately 14 000 litres of fuel per hour and with the 747-400 I would fly from Melbourne to Los Angeles or Singapore to London non-stop. You can say why and the maximum range is 13,450 kilometres that’s why there’re called long-haul aircraft. The 747-400 is also a very fast aircraft. One of the fastest commercial airliner. It typically flies at about Mach 0.85 or 912 kilometres per hour at cruise altitude. Now, what else can I tell you. Well, as you know, the 747-400 is the biggest aircraft in the Boeing family. Its wingspan is 64,4 meters and it’s 70,7 meters in length. The tail is a huge 90,4 metres high making it visibly taller than its sister 767. And there is a plenty of room inside too. The cabin is 6,1-metre-wide inside, 6,13-metre-wide outside. So you can see why this is one of the most successful commercial airliners in the world with already either over 30 years of successful flights.

QUESTIONS:

1. How many Boeing 747 does Air Pacific International Airlines contain?

2. How many passengers can 747-400 hold?

3. What is the maximum takeoff weight of 747-400?

4. How much fuel does 747-400 carry?

5. How many litres of fuels does 747-400 burn up per hour?

6. Why is 747-400 the fastest aircraft?

7. What is the visible difference between 747-400 and 767?

8. Why is 747-400 called long-haul aircraft?

UNIT 4

² T 4.1

On December 5th 1945 five American bomber aircraft disappeared into the ocean off the west coast of Florida in the United States. At that time, nobody knew why this happened and even today the mystery of' Flight 19' remains unsolved. This unexplained disappearance is only one example of a whole history of mysterious events that have occurred in the area known to the world as the Bermuda Triangle.

Five bomber aircraft departed a navy base in Florida at about 2 o'clock in the afternoon. After they took off they turned and flew east. The weather was fine although there were showers in the area and the sea was rough. The pilots were completing a standard training exercise and flying out to practise their bombing skills over the ocean. Captain Taylor was the flight leader, an instructor who had flown many similar missions in the area before.

About an hour and a half into the flight, Taylor suddenly reported that his airplane's compass wasn't working. He said it was spinning around in a strange way. People in the control tower couldn't hear his radio transmissions very clearly but they understood his problem and told him to fly west because this would bring the aircraft back over dry land. At that point it seems Taylor became confused. He thought he and his men had originally started flying south and so he turned south instead of west. This meant that they were flying out to sea and not towards the coast! At the same time communication between the airplanes and the control tower became worse as the weather deteriorated. Radio contact eventually stopped at 6.00 in the evening after it was already dark. The last time people heard a signal from Flight 19 they were still travelling in the wrong direction. They were lost!

At 6.20 two rescue aircraft took off to search for the missing aircraft. By now the weather was becoming worse and the Bombers were running low on fuel. The two rescue planes became separated in the clouds, and when the pilot of one of the aircraft arrived in the rescue area at about 7.15, where he thought Flight 19 would be, he realized that his companion had gone missing as well. Just before 7.30 the remaining rescue pilot contacted Florida and explained that now six airplanes had disappeared without a trace!

Later investigations suggested that the five training aircraft had run out of fuel and plunged into the ocean. People on a ship that was sailing in the area at the time, said they saw oil floating on the water, but searchers found no trace of the missing men or aircraft.

Today, no one knows exactly what happened to Flight 19. In 1991 divers discovered five similar looking aircraft on the bottom of the sea, near Florida. At first people thought they had discovered the missing aircraft from Flight 19, some 46 years after the event. But later it was clear that they were different aircraft and not the same as those of Flight 19. The true story of what happened on that day in 1945 remains a mystery. The area now known as the Bermuda Triangle, continues to have a history of mysterious and unexplained events.

‘...Yes, ah, flying has been very good to me. I've been able to see the world, earn a great income, um, meet a lot of wonderful people and I've enjoyed the professional challenges of course! I started flying when I was 21, here in Melbourne. I had finished university and decided that I wanted to be a pilot - like my Dad. I worked as a waiter when I did my flight training - working really hard on weekends and then having my lessons on Mondays and Thursdays. Really happy times, but I remember I didn't have much money. Ha-ha! After I got my license I moved to Canada to do my airline exams -I wanted to experience life in another country and, er, I had a cousin living over there. I met my future wife, Julie, while I was studying in Canada. We met when I accidentally spilt coffee on her at a cafe one day! We got together and got married after two years. We lived in Canada for three years from 1989 to 1992 and we had a wonderful time. We then decided to live in Asia as soon as I finished my studies. Julie had a great opportunity with a firm in Hong Kong and I was lucky enough to get a job with Cathay Pacific, flying 747s. However we were both really busy after that; Julie got promoted and I managed to become a captain on the 747 just before I reached 7000 hours. This was a really exciting time in my life and I... I enjoyed the responsibility and flew steadily for another four years. Unfortunately though I had a silly accident while I was on holiday back in Australia in 1997.1 fell and hit my back while I was riding a motorbike on my friend's farm and this put me in hospital for three months! Stupid, really. Anyway, I stopped flying at this point, but luckily for me this was during the Asian economic crisis and so the company had to reduce the number of pilots anyway. I got back to flying eventually and we stayed in Hong Kong until November 1999, um moved back to Melbourne the following year and we've been living here happily, I must say, for five years now.’

An historic Sopwith Camel biplane was destroyed by fire at Kyneton Airport on Wednesday.

Fire crews were called to the scene at 11.45 p.m. and despite quickly extinguishing the blaze, the priceless 90-year-old World War One fighter could not be saved, police said. Initially arson was suspected, however, later an electrical fault was discovered to be the cause of the fire. The aircraft had a history of bad luck,' its owner Ron Douglas said today. 'It was my pride and joy' he sobbed, I crashed it twice years ago, once in 1992 and then in 97. I still loved it though and I flew it almost every day.'

Fire crews arrived to find that the fire almost totally destroyed the ancient aircraft and had started engulfing equipment in the hangar. They used foam, water and blankets to get the fire under control. Earlier that afternoon Mr. Douglas had flown the ancient biplane and had gone home after pushing the aircraft back into the hangar for the night. He had just gone to bed when the phone rang, and the police called him to come down to the airport. I came as quickly as I could but by the time I arrived the poor thing had gone,' he said. 'Three years ago I had almost decided to sell it but decided to keep it here instead. This is really a very sad day for me.'

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority said it had sent officers down to investigate the cause of the fire. No one was injured during the incident.
