Присвійний відмінок іменників.




Іменники в англійській мові мають лише два відмінки: загальний Victor, father і присвійний, або родовий Victor’s school, father’s work. Присвійний відмінок виражає належність і таким чином відповідає в українській мові родовому відмінку of, наприклад a school of Victor, a work of father.

Присвійний відмінок іменників утворюється додаванням апострофа та букви s (-‘s) до форми однини іменника в загальному відмінку та апострофа (-‘) до форми множини іменника, а інколи й до форми однини із закінченням -s або -x (крім іменника child-children, child’s-children’s).

A girl+’s=a girl’s hat (капелюх дівчинки, тобто капелюх, який належить дівчині).

Victor+’s=Victor’s book (книга Віктора, або Вікторова книга).

Girls+’s=girls’ hats (капелюхи дівчат).

У деяких випадках присвійний відмінок може утворюватися або за допомогою- ‘s або -‘. Наприклад: James’s car або James’car (автомобіль Джеймса).

Закінчення -‘s вимовляється за тими ж правилами, що й закінчення -s у множині іменників.

Коли вживається? Переважно коли перший іменник є:

1. назва істоти: a boy’s name (ім’я хлопчика), a cat’s tail (хвіст кота).

2. назва організації, країни, міста, позначення часу:

a company’s success (успіх компанії), Ukraine’s population (населення України), London’s theatres (театри Лондона), Sunday’s newspaper (недільна газета).

Exercise 1. Join the two sentences. Show possession with ' s or s' or of. Add " the " if necessary.

 

Model: a) Our car has a boot. All our suitcases are there.

All our suitcases are in the boot of our car.

b) Mary has a new coat. It is certainly very beautiful.

Mary's new coat is certainly very beautiful.

 

1. The boys have an aunt. She is arriving tomorrow. 2. The book has a cover. It is yellow and green. 3. The table has carved legs. They are not very strong. 4. Doctor Johnson has an office. It is on the ground floor. 5. The children have a dog. It is in the garden. 6. My brother has a car. It is black. 7. This wall is high. Nobody knows its height. 8. James has a brother. He is an architect.

Exercise 2. Answer the following questions. Use the nouns suggested in the possessive case.

Model: Whose sister is she? (Mary)

She is Mary's sister.

Exercise 3. Change the nouns with the preposition of to nouns in the possessive case where this change is permissible.

 

1. The voice of my brother. 2. The plays of Bernard Shaw. 3. The watch of my father. 4. The book of the boys. 5. The end of the book. 6. The parents of Peter. 7. The birthday of my daughter. 8. The novels of Tolstoy. 15. The secretary of the director. 16. The hats of the visitors.

 

Exercise 4. Translate into English.

 

1. Бiблiотека мого брата дуже хороша. 2. Чоловiк моєї сестри - лiкар. 3. Кiмната Олени дуже велика i свiтла. 4. Сестра Петра живе в Одесi. 5. Робочий день мого брата починається о 8 годинi ранку. 6. Чи знаєте ви адресу цього студента? 7. Пальто Олени дуже тепле. 8. Сад мого друга дуже гарний? 9. Де книжки дiвчаток? 10. Менi подобається голос Олени. 11. Вiн не чув наказу вчителя. 12. Матроси виконали накази капiтана. 13. Я говорив з секретарем директора. 14. Я бачив нове пальто Петра. 15. Я прочитав вчора найкращi оповiдання цього письменника. 16. Я не знаю рiшення директора. 17. Я не знаю номера телефона цієї фірми.
