The Present Continuous

The Present Continuous tense is formed with the Present tense (am/is/are) + Present Participle (to be + Ving)
The Present Continuous is used to talk about present situations which we see as short-term or temporary.
The Present Continuous is used with following time expressions: now, at … o'clock,
Use	Example
For an action happening now or around this now	I’m not wearing a coat as it isn’t cold. He’s teaching French and learning Greek.
For a definite future arrangement with time expressions	I’m meeting Ann tonight. She’s going to the theatre with me.
With a point in time to indicate an action which begins before this point and probably continues after it	At six I’m bathing the baby.
With always: -for a frequently repeated action to express annoyance, irritation	-He is always losing his keys. I’m always making that mistake.
For an action which appears to be continuous	He’s always working = He works the whole time.
For the developing or changing situation	Ukrainians are drinking more & more coffee.
The following verbs do not express a process and are not normally used in progressive tenses:
-verbs denoting mental activity (to know, to believe, to realize, to suppose, to mean, to understand, to remember, to forget, to agree, to recall, to recognize, to recollect, to think.) But: think can be used in the continuous when no opinion is given or asked for: What are you thinking about? ~ I’m thinking about the play we saw last night.
- assume can be used in the continuous when it means ‘accept as a starting point’: I’m assuming that you have to do a lot of research. Assume power/control of a country or organization can also be used in the continuous: The new government is assuming power at once.
- expect can be used in the continuous when it means ‘await’: She’s expecting a baby in May.
-verbs denoting wish (to want, to wish, to prefer)verbs denoting sense perception (to feel, to hear, to smell, to taste, to see, to notice, to observe, to look). But: feel, when followed by an adjective indicating the subject’s emotions or physical or mental conditions (angry/pleased, happy/sad, hot/cold, tense relaxed, nervous/confident) is normally used in the simple tenses, but can also be used in the continuous: How do you feel/are you feeling? ~ I feel/am feeling better. Feel meaning ‘touch’ can be used in the continuous: The doctor was feeling her pulse.
- look (at), look for/in/into/out andlook on (=watch) are deliberate actions and can be used on the continuous tenses: He’s looking for his glasses.
smell = sniff at: Why are you smelling the milk? Does it smell sour?taste = to test the flavor of: She was tasting the pudding to see if it was sweet enough. see = meet by appointment: The director is seeing the applicants this morning. = visit: Tom is seeing the town/the sights.see about = make arrangements:We are seeing about a work permit for you. see smb out = escort him/her home.see smb to + place = escort him/her to +placesee someone off = say goodbye to a departing traveler at the starting point of his journey: We’re leaving tomorrow. Bill is seeing us off at the airport. hear = listen formally to (complaints/evidence): The court is hearing evidence this afternoon.
-verbs denoting feeling (to love, to hate, to like) But: love = emotional colouring: I’m loving it. -verbs denoting abstract relations: (to need, to belong, to own, to contain, to consist, to depend, to seem, to appear, to matter)
