The invention relates to a method for determining a previous state of stress in the area of a mountain range or soil. Said method comprises the following steps: applying a reference bit for a radial position, excavating a tunnel section, introducing a radially effective support in the area of the reference bit, determining the force acting upon said support and/or determining the dimensions of the support, and determining the previous state of stress using the detected force and/or dimensions of the support. The method for determining parts of a line that is characteristic of a mountain range comprises the following steps: introducing gradually variable, radially effective safety devices, allowing the support introduced to be deformed by geometrical changes, determining the force acting upon said support and determining the course and/or a parameter of the line characteristic of the mountain range on the basis of the detected force and/or the changed dimensions of the support. The values obtained are used in tunneling methods and systems.
