Remember: spokesman — пресс - секретарь / атташе; speaker — спикер (парламента).

a) The French military, like the US, is targeting Islamic State (IS) fighters with air strikes. But the US says Russia is carrying out random strikes against the Syrian opposition.

 

b) Mr Hollande will meet his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Paris on Friday. The meeting was called to discuss peace efforts in Ukraine, but these are expected to be overshadowed by the crisis in Syria.

 

c) The CIA has withdrawn staff from the US embassy in Beijing, fearing data stolen from government computers could expose its agents. In April, data about 21 million federal employees was stolen in a massive attack on the US Office of Personnel Management (OPM).Security companies have blamed Chinese state hackers for the attack.

 

d) Mr Lukashenko's tight grip on power has brought criticism from the West - with the US Bush administration describing him in 2005 as the "last dictator in Europe" at the head of an "outpost of tyranny". Human rights groups accuse him of widespread abuses. Most Belarusian media channels are controlled by the government. Belarus elected a parliament filled with supporters of President Alexander Lukashenko in 2012 after a boycott by the main opposition parties.

 

e) An Israeli couple travelling with their four young children have been killed by Palestinian gunmen in the occupied West Bank, the Israeli military says. The shooting came hours after Israel's PM said he was prepared to resume peace talks with the Palestinians.Two decades of on-off peace talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians since the 1993 Oslo Accord have failed to produce a permanent settlement.

 

f) The Israeli prime minister warned that the international deal on Iran's nuclear programme made war much more likely than peace. Israel has consistently opposed the deal with Iran, which says Israel should not exist. Mr Netanyahu has previously warned that Israel will do everything necessary to thwart the prospect of Iran developing nuclear weapons.

 

g) Vladimir Putin has bitterly condemned the downing of a Russian jet on the Turkey-Syria border. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said he was cancelling his visit to Turkey, where he was due on Wednesday, over the incident. NATO's ambassadors have called on Turkey to show "cool-headedness" after downing Russian warplane, diplomatic sources are quoted by Reuters news agency as saying.

 

h) An EU summit is due to begin in Brussels with fresh allegations of US spying threatening to overshadow talks. It comes a day after German Chancellor Angela Merkel called President Barack Obama over claims that the US had monitored her mobile phone. France's President Francois Hollande is pressing for the issue to be put on the agenda following reports that millions of French calls had been monitored. EU leaders will also discuss Europe's economic recovery and immigration

i) The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) is holding a special meeting in Vienna to discuss developments in Ukraine. An "increasing number of Russian troops" are involved in the fighting, the US ambassador to Ukraine, Geoffrey Pyatt, writes on Twitter.

j) Gabon's constitutional court has upheld President Ali Bongo's election victory, rejecting opposition calls for a recount. There have been fears that such a decision could trigger fresh violence. The government said it would hold opposition leader Jean Ping responsible if clashes erupted following the ruling. President Bongo won August's election by just 6,000 votes but the opposition says the poll was rigged.
