Пословицы, поговорки, идиомы, фразеологизмы




В этом разделе встречаются следующие виды заданий:

-Найдите эквивалент выражения (пословицы)

-Дополните пословицу (найдите окончание пословицы, восстановите пословицу)

-Закончите фразеологизм

-Соотнесите данную идиому с ее значением.

Привожу эти выражения на русском языке и их английский эквивалент (1-й вид задания):

Беда не приходит одна. – It never rains but pours.

Без труда не вытащишь и рыбку из пруда. – No pains, no gains.

Будет и на нашей улице праздник. – Every dog has its day.

Все хорошо, что хорошо кончается. – All is well that ends well.

Всему свое время. – Everything is good in its season.

Где хотенье, там и уменье. – Where there is a will, there is a way.

Голод – лучший повар. – Hunger is the best sauce.

Две стороны одной медали. – Every cloud has a silver lining.

Долг платежом красен. – One good turn deserves another.

Легок на помине. – Talk of the devil and he will appear.

Либо пан, либо пропал. – Neck or nothing.

Лучше поздно, чем никогда. – Better late than never.

Минута час бережет. – A stitch in time saves nine.

На безрыбье и рак рыба. – Half a loaf is better than no bread.

Наперед не загадывай. – Don’t cross the bridge before you come to it.

Не вешай нос. – Never say die.

Не все то золото, что блестит. – All is not gold that glitters.

Не зная броду, не лезь в воду. – Look before you leap.

Обжегшись на молоке, дуешь на воду. – Once bitten, twice shy.

О вкусах не спорят. – Tastes differ.

О человеке судят не по словам, а по делам. – Handsome is that handsome does.

Отсутствие новостей – хорошая новость. – No news is good news.

Последняя капля переполняет чашу. – It is the last straw that breaks the camel’s back.

С глаз долой – из сердца вон. – Out of sight – out of mind.

Сделал дело, гуляй смело. – Business before pleasure.

Семь раз отмерь – один раз отрежь. – Look before you leap.

Сколько голов, столько умов. – So many men, so many minds.

Слезами горю не поможешь. – It’s no use crying over spilt milk.

Честность – лучшая политика. – Honesty is the best policy.

Что посеешь, то и пожнешь. – As you make your bed, so you must lie on it.

Следует помнить, что поговорки и пословицы как правило не переводятся дословно, -

к ним подбирается наиболее близкий по смыслу эквивалент.

Далее приведем пословицы, которые необходимо дополнить нужным словом, целиком:

A change of work is as good as the rest.- Actions speak louder than words.- An apple a day keeps the doctor away. – An Englishman’s home is his castle. – Art is long, life is short. – A

sound mind in a sound body. – A watched pot never boils. – Early to bed, early to rise makes

a man healthy, wealthy and wise. – If you cannot have the best, make best of what you have. –

Live and learn. – Lost time is never found again. Never put off till tomorrow what you can do

today.- Practice makes perfect. – There is no place like home. – The longest day must have an

end. – Well begun is half done.

В следующем задании следует закончить фразеологизм, поэтому вновь приведем эти фразеологизмы целиком: A new broom sweeps clean. – Новая метла по-новому метет.

A bird may be known by its song. - Птицу можно узнать по полету.

Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. – Дареному коню в зубы не смотрят.

First think, then speak. – Сначала подумай, потом скажи.

Hear much, speak little. – Слушай много, говори мало.

In short. – Короче говоря.

Knowledge is power. – Знание – сила.

Little and sweet. – Мал золотник да дорог.

No gain without pain. – Без труда нет плода.

Nothing hurts more than truth. – Ничто не ранит больнее правды.

Somebody seems to have second sight. – Как будто в воду глядел.

Strike while the iron is hot. – Куй железо пока горячо.

To act (play) the fool. – Валять дурака.

To be (turn) upside down. – Вверх дном.

To cover up one’s track. – Заметать следы.

To get out of bed on the wrong side. – Встать с левой ноги.

To give up the game. – Выйти из игры.

To make both ends meet. – Сводить концы с концами.

To make somebody blush. – Ввести в краску.

To make the cup run over. – Наполнить чашу через край.

To pull oneself together. – Взять себя в руки.

War is the sport of kings. – Война – развлечение королей.

Words cut more than swords. – Слова ранят сильнее, чем ножи (мечи).

You know the man by his friends. – Скажи м не кто твой друг, и я скажу кто ты.

Последнее задание в данной рубрике – «Соотнесите данную идиому с ее значением»:

All over the world = everywhere in the world

A fat cat = somebody rich and powerful

4.You would meet the following character Friday in “Robinson Crusoe”.

5.”Globe Theatre” was organized by W. Shakespeare.

6.The monument to Admiral Nelson stands in the centre of Trafalgar Square in London.

7.Disneyland is children’s park of wonders.

8.Hollywood is in Los Angeles.

9.The oldest and the best known public school for boys in Great Britain is Eaton.

10.Concerts of classical music are held in the Royal Albert Hall in London.

11.”Nelson Column” is the name of a monument.

12.A famous American artist is Norman Rockwell.

13.The famous Globe Theatre where Shakespeare staged his plays is situated in London.

14.Jonathan Swift wrote “Gulliver’s travels”.

15.Robinson Crusoe met his friend Friday on the island.

16.The author of the book “Three men in a boat” is Jerome K. Jerome.

17.Uncle Tom, the main hero of the novel “Uncle Tom’s cabin” was a slave.

18.The novel “Treasure Island” was written by Robert Stevenson.

19.Jonathan Swift is a famous English writer.

20.Benjamin Britten was a famous English composer.

21.Mayne Reid was an American writer.

22.The famous pop-group “The Beatles” came from Liverpool.

23.Sherwood forest is famous for legendary Robin Hood.

24.The Whispering Gallery is remarkable for its acoustics.

25.“Pygmalion” was written by Bernard Shaw.

26.St.Paul’s Cathedral was built by the greatest architect Christopher Wren.

4.The Chairman of the House of Commons in the English Parliament is the Speaker.

5.The members of the House of Commons are chosen by the electors.

6.The USA consists of 50 states and the District of Columbia.

7.Canada is a federal state.

8.The American Senate consists of 100 members.

9.Formally the head of Canada is the Queen of Great Britain.

10.Members of the Parliament gather to make laws in the Palace of Westminster.

11.Prince Charles is Queen Elizabeth’s II son.

12.In the House of Commons the members sit on 2 sides.

13.Nowadays the Queen reigns but doesn’t rule.

14.The political system of the USA consists of three branches.

15.The House of Representatives in the USA has about 435 members elected by popular vote every 4 years.

1.Americans celebrate Independence Day on the 4th of July.

3.The national symbol of Canada is the maple leaf.

4.The nickname of the flag of the UK is Union Jack.

5.The official language of Ireland is Irish.

6.The colours of the Irish flag are orange, white, green.

7.The part of Britain called “a land of songs” is Wales.

8.The national emblem of England is a rose (a red rose).

9.The national emblem of Scotland is a thistle.

10.The national emblem of Wales is a daffodil.

11.The national emblem of Ireland is a shamrock.
