Упражнение 5. Контрольный выстрел. Задание прежнее. Постарайтесь не делать ошибок.




1. Он почувствовал, как кто-то схватил его за руку. He felt someone grab his hand.

2. Я думаю, что произошедшее заставит пиратов задуматься о своем поведении. I believe this happening will make the pirates think about their behaviour.

3. Услышав крик, гном невольно вздрогнул. Having heard the cry the dwarf gave a start.

4. Фильм оказался довольно посредственным (middling). The film turned out to be rather middling.

5. Чтобы быть в хорошей форме, нет ничего лучше физических упражнений. If you want to be fit there is nothing better than physical exercises.

6. Я хочу, чтобы Пиноккио сделал выводы из этого случая. I want Pinocchio to draw conclusions from this incident.

7. У принцессы были причины не желать возвращения принца. The princess had her own reasons for not willing the prince to return.

8. Она оказалась последней, кто видел его живым. She turned out to be the last one who saw him alive.

9. Принцесса не привыкла вставать рано. The princess is not used to getting up early.

10. Они утверждают, что видели, как он пытался украсть картину. They claim to have seen him trying to steal the painting.

11. Вы не возражаете, если мы останемся здесь на ночь? Do you mind our staying here for the night?

12. Я слышал, как кто-то упомянул мое имя. I heard someone mention my name.

13. Ведьма практически бросила курить. The witch has nearly given up smoking.

14. Бегемот вряд ли сознается (make a confession). Нет смысла разговаривать с ним. The hippo is unlikely to make a confession. There is no point in speaking to him.

15. Вся история закончилась тем, что она выиграла дело. The story ended by her winning the case.

16. Дети с нетерпением ждали того дня, когда они пойдут в поход (hike). The children looked forward to going on a hike.

17. Вернувшись через год, Синяя Борода обнаружил, что его жена изменилась. The Blue Beard returned a year later only to discover that his wife had changed a lot.

18. Людоед предложил, чтобы мы обсудили этот вопрос за обедом. The ogre suggested us/our discussing the question at lunch.

19. Кот лежал на кровати с закрытыми глазами. The cat was lying on the bed with his eyes closed.

20. В этот момент мы случайно оказались рядом и слышали, как пираты спорили. We happened to be there at that moment and heard the pirates arguing.

21. Она настаивала на том, чтобы позвонить в полицию. She insisted on calling the police.

22. Разбитую чашку было уже не склеить. The broken cup wasn’t worth gluing together.

23. У Осла было особое умение добиваться того, чего он хочет. The donkey had a special gift to get what he wanted.

24. Это самый верный способ потерять все деньги. This is the most unfailing way to lose all the money.

25. Вчера я проявил все пленки в ателье на Комсомольской. Yesterday I had all the films developed at the studio on Komsomolskaya street.

26. Она слишком ненаблюдательна (unobservant), чтобы заметить, что что-то произошло. She is too unobservant to notice that sth has happened.

27. Собака повадилась клянчить у стола. The dog took to asking for food.

28. Дракон упустил хорошую возможность решить все проблемы одним махом (at one stroke). The dragon has lost a good opportunity to solve all the problems at one stroke.

29. Не поворачивая головы, Гарри спросил, куда им дальше идти. Without turning his head Harry asked where they should go next.

30. Спустившись к обеду, людоед обнаружил, что дверь в столовую заперта. The ogre came down to dinner only to discover that the dining room door was locked.

31. Бабушка провела полчаса в поисках очков. Grandma spent half an hour looking for her glasses.

32. Прежде чем рассказать об этих удивительных событиях, я хотел бы описать их участников. Prior to telling about these surprising events I’d like to describe their participants.

33. Помыв посуду, ведьма начала стирать белье. Having washed the dishes the witch started washing the linen.

34. Как можно уехать из Лондона, не побывав в Национальной Галерее! How can you leave London without visiting the National Gallery!

35. Мы заставили его согласиться, лишь прибегнув к угрозам. We made him agree only by resorting to threatening.

 

WORD POWER

A. “Used to do” or “be/get used to doing”? Fill in the blanks with the appropriate form of “be” or “get” where necessary. Sometimes the meaning is negative.

1. When he was a boy he used to play football.

2. - Wouldn’t you like to sit down? - No, thank you. I am used to standing.

3. – I don’t like the food here. – You will soon get used to it.

4. At first I made very slow progress, because I wasn’t used to the system.

5. We used to go out more often before the baby was born.

6. – Didn’t you find it difficult to concentrate with the radio on? – No. I am used to it.

7. The witch used to wear her hair long.

8. They say one can get used to everything.

9. The donkey felt very lonely, as he wasn’t not used to living by himself.

10. The children got used to the new teacher by the end of the month.

11. I can’t get used to the new machine.

12. My father used to read a lot before his eyesight got so bad.

13. He was very annoyed by her remark, because he wasn’t used to being spoken to like that.

14. She used to dream of becoming a famous actress.

15. It took me a long time to get used to the new methods.

16. This street used to be called Horseguards Avenue.

17. There was no letter from David but Janet did not worry. She was / had got used to his thoughtlessness.

18. Motorists from abroad often have difficulty in Britain, because they aren’t used to driving on the left.

 

B. The words in this exercise look simple enough, but watch out. They are frequently misused because of the similarity in their appearance. In each of the following sentences choose the correct word enclosed in brackets.

1. You should speak to someone else (beside/ besides) Helen.

2. He always works on (alternate /alternative) days: Monday, Tuesday, Friday.

3. The kingdom is in a problematic (economic /economical) state.

4. Please, keep (quiet /quite).

5. You should go through the official (canals/ channels) if you want the administration to help.

6. He partly walked but (most/ mostly) ran to the station to be on time for the train.

7. The sign “(continual /continuous) performance” means that there is a short pause between the end of one showing of the film and the beginning of the next.

8. His chances looked (bad /badly).

9. The witch (accepted /excepted) the invitation with joy.

10. That’s a mistake he (most/ almost) always makes.

11. He seems to have but a (general /generous) idea of the subject.

12. The (imminent/ eminent) Doctor Jones cured her of her sickness.

13. Helen, now a school teacher, was (formerly /formally) a typist.

14. The prince and the princess danced in a (specious/ spacious) hall.

15. The jury believed the witness because his story sounded so (credible /credulous).

16. The pirates had (averse/ adverse) winds throughout the voyage.

17. Jesse James was a (noted/ notorious) criminal.

18. The sermon was a good (stimulus /stimulant) to noble action.

19. His argument sounded (plausible /plosive), but it was untrue.

20. Did Joan’s marriage (proceed/ precede) or follow her graduation from University?

21. The witness for the (persecution/ prosecution) did not turn up in court.

22. Dictators are generally (contemptible/ contemptuous) of their people’s wishes.

23. All the critics acclaimed the (exceptionable/ exceptional) merit of the young painter’s landscapes.

24. Collecting stamps in his spare time was the dwarf’s (avocation / vocation).

25. I always (rise /raise) at seven o’clock.
