Semasiology as a branch of linguistics

Semasiology is a branch of linguistics which studies simentics or meaning of linguistic units belonging to different language levels (morphemes, words, sentences, texts…)

Lexical semasiology analysis the meaning of the words and word-combinations, relations between the meanings and the changes which these meanings undergo.

Stylistic semasiology is conserned only with those semantic changes and relations which are used as expressive means ans stylistic devices. The subject of stylistic semasiology is not only the basic meaning of a linguistic unit as such but its additional meaning which appears in 2 cases:

- In the case of unusual denotative reference of words (secondary nomination)

- In the case of unusual combination of meanings expressed by these units.

In stylistic semasiology we also distinguish expressive means and stylistic devices.

The development of human experience leads to create new notions which are fixed in the language and in the vocabulary. However, if every new notion were given a new name the vocabulary would have been too long, beyod human nemory.

The tendency of economy of language means and analytical activity of people leads to the usage of secondary nomination:

- the usage of the existing words and word-combinations to denote new notions;

- to give a new name to the already new object.

Secondary nomination is not abitary. It’s carried according to certaing principles or rules, the most common, often used. Transfer of the mane occur in 2 cases:

1. on the basis of similarity or likeness of 2 objects which may be rather subjective and based on individual perseption of different objects.

e.g. the giirl the flower the candy

2. on the basis of contiguity or some logical relations that are ususally objective.

e.g. Brulov (with the meaning his painting)
