The purpose of a Topographic surveying is to gather survey data about the natural and man-made features of the land, as well as its elevations. From this information a three- dimensional map may be prepared. The topographic map may be prepared in the office after collecting the field data or right away in the field by plane table.

The plane-table method is advantageous in open country and when many irregular lines need to be plotted. It is also advantageous for small-scale mapping.

Methods of Plane Table Surveying:

1. Radiation.

2. Intersection.

3. Traversing.

4. Resection.

The most frequently used method of plane tabling is radiation.

The work usually consists of the following:

1. Determining horizontal location and elevation of ground points to provide enough data for plotting when the map is prepared

2. Locating natural and man-made features that may be required by the purpose of the survey

3. Computing distances, angles, and elevations

4. Drawing the topographic map
