SHIP REPAIR SPECIFICATION
The Chief Engineer fills in the request for repairs form and prepares in cooperation with the chief officers repair specifications (repair list). After repair list has been prepared, it is submitted to the repair inspection of the fleet manager’s office, reviewed and approved by the technical division and sufficient number of copies is supplied to the vessel. In order to perform repairs abroad, a copy of repair list is forwarded to the appropriate ship repair yard. Repair specifications shall be prepared by the heads of the departments of the vessel making good use of the Defect List. The defect list shall be updated on monthly basis, copies sent to the Technical Superintendent and should contain following information: · Details of the defect · Who should attend to the defect · What is required to rectify the problem · Does vessel remain seaworthy and operational with the defect · Can temporary repairs be considered It is essential that very good specifications are made which cover all the areas of the vessel which need to be attended. The specifications must contain all pertinent information regarding work required. Each job entered in the specifications shall be reviewed to ensure that all possible details are included so that there is no ambiguity and no gray areas, of which the ship yard can not provide a quotation. Each such task should be denoted a separate JOB NUMBER. The repair specifications for major and expensive jobs should be prepared and sent to the Technical Superintendent well in advance to assist in planning a cost effective arrangement. Repair Specifications must contain following information: · Exact details of repair work required. · Shape, dimensions and thickness of steel renewals. · Length and size of pipe renewals. · Details of bends, type of material, number of bolts, type of joints, type of gaskets. · Size and type of valve, number of bolts, actuator details, removal/blanking of hydraulic lines. · Full or partial renewal of fittings such as ladders, rails, brackets etc. required. · Estimated quantity of materials or Spare Parts required. · Details of cropping from, and welding to, surrounding structure. · Location of work site and whether work shall carried out on site or removal of equipment is required. · Whether any access is required to carry out the work such as:- · Electric cable removal, conduit removal and penetrations required. · Any equipment/structure to be moved, lifted or cropped · If any Crain age or Transportation is required. · If any staging or any special rigging is required. · If any Lighting. Ventilation or Cleaning is required · If any Special Technician. Manufacturers Service Engineer or Class Surveyor is required to oversee, approve or supervise the repair. · Any special safety precautions procedures are required. · Any consequential / associated work required as a result of carrying out repairs of any of the repair jobs specified. In certain job specifications it is also better to attach drawings, sketches and photographs. These specifications shall be completed at least 4 months prior to the dry docking date and sent to the Technical Superintendent, who will review the specifications to ensure there are no gray areas and all the jobs have been properly described. He will then send out these specifications for quotations.
