Lesson 7. The aim of the lesson is to go on polishing your pronunciation skills.

  1. Translate the information about closed and open syllables and answer the questions.

Что такое открытый слог? Что такое закрытый слог? Что такое немая гласная? Что такое дифтонг? Что такое слогообразующая сонанта? Каковы правила деления слова на слоги?

To count the number of syllables in an English word you should count the number of vowel sounds. Remember that silent e doesn’t form a syllable. A diphthong forms one syllable. (E.g.:The word come has two vowel letters but only one vowel sound and hence one syllable. The word outside has four vowel letters but only two vowel sounds and hence two syllables).

Syllables can be closed and open. In a closed syllable, the vowel is followed by a consonant, we say that it is closed by a consonant (e.g.: in, ask, sock). In an open syllable, nothing comes after the vowel, we say that the vowel is open (e.g.: he, see, no). A vowel placed after a consonant attracts the consonant and opens the preceding syllable (e.g.: ba-by, e-ven, ca-ke). The sonorants m, n, and l are syllabic, i.e. they can form a syllable with preceding alveolar consonants t, d, s,z in the last syllable of the word (e.g.: bot-tle, bee-tle).

 

  1. Define the number of syllables in the following words. Classify the syllables into open and closed.

  1. Translate the information about the monophthong [i] into Russian.
The vowel [i]is a front high unrounded short lax monophthong. It is pronounced with the bulk of the tongue in the front part of the mouth cavity, but slightly retracted. The front of the tongue is raised in the direction of the hard palate, but not so high as for [i:]. The lips are spread or neutral. The opening between the jaws is narrow. The vowel [i] is short, and, like all the other short vowels, it is lax. As compared with the Russian [и] and the English [i:], the vowel [i] is more open and less front.  
  1. Read the following (descending scale):
[iz, in, il, i t, itdiz, fi t, pi t, stil, bi t, lif t, fi t, lis t, pi t, si t ];
  1. Read observing the difference (descending scale):

  1. Translate the information about the monophthong [e] into Russian.
The vowel [e]is a front mid narrow unrounded short lax monophthong. It is pronounced with the bulk of the tongue in the front part of the mouth cavity. The front of the tongue in the front part of the mouth cavity. The front of the tongue is raised in the direction of the hard palate, but a little less than for the [i] vowel. The lips are spread. The opening between the jaws is medium. The vowel [e] is short and lax.  
  1. Read the following (descending scale):

  1. Read the words (NB! ck = [k]):

Lesson 8. The aim of the lesson is to go on polishing your pronunciation skills.

1. Give the "di-DA" pattern of the following phrases:

Странно, не правда ли? Ну и денечек! Ты бы не поверила. Дай же мне его! Мальчик не пострадал. Где стол справок? Ты, пожалуйста, не звони. Мне бы твои заботы! Сказал бы, да совестно. Вот уж не ожидали!

2. Give your responses to each phrase. Keep the same rhythm.

Ты пришел-то зачем? Почему мне никто не звонил? Теперь темнеет рано. До чего же интересно!

3. Do the mute exercises.

press your lips, bite your lip, spread your lips, protrude your lips then spread, open your mouth paying attention to the flat position of the lips, protrude your tongue forward, tongue to the alveolar ridge, apical and dorsal positions of the tongue, tongue between the teeth.

4. Reproduce the groups of English consonants: [tdnl, mbp, fv, sz, kg, ptk, bdg].

5. Read the following:

[si:, mi:, vi:l, ni:z, mi:n, i:v, sni:z, si:zn]; [in, il, if, iz, liz, liv]; [em, en, ef, es, men, ben, bed, def, mes]

6. Translate the information about the non-lateral post-alveolar liquid (= плавный ≈ щелевой) sonorant [r].

The consonant [r] is a non-lateral forelingual cacuminal (= загнутый назад) post-alveolar liquid sonorant. It is articulated with the tongue tip raised towards the back part of the alveolar ridge, forming a rather wide air-passage, while the front of the tongue is to some extent depressed (= вогнутый) (cacuminal articulation). The sides of the tongue are raised and the air passes along the median line of the tongue without any audible (= слышимый) friction. As a result tone (= звук, голос) prevails over noise. The vocal cords are drawn near together and vibrate. The Russian consonant [p] is a rolled (trilled) cacuminal alveolar sonorant. In pronouncing the Russian [p] the tongue tip vibrates, interrupting the air stream repeatedly and forming momentary obstructions against the alveolar ridge. The tongue tip taps against the alveolar ridge two or three times.

8. Pronounce with the English [r]: жрать, жрец, жребий, редко, Рим, ром, раб, брат, прок, ворота, красть, грабли, мразь.

9. Read with the English accent:

Били копыта. Пели будто: - Гриб. - Грабь. - Гроб. - Груб, - Ветром опита, Льдом обута, Улица скользила. (В. Маяковский) Однажды галок поп пугая, В кустах увидел попугая, И говорит тот попугай: «Пугать ты галок, поп, пугай, Но галок, поп, в кустах пугая, Пугать не смей ты попугая!»

10. Practice reading: Read out all the words that denote: a) colors, b) actions, c) mental or physical states.

11. Pronounce these groups of words paying attention to the differences in the articulation of [i:], [i], and [e].
